Need your exact stock size?

Use the driver-door placard first. It lists factory tire size, load rating, and cold PSI for your specific cab, drivetrain, and payload package.

Daily driver half-ton?

P-metric or lighter LT tires usually ride better, weigh less, and return better MPG than aggressive E-range tires.

Tow or haul often?

Load index and load range matter more than tread pattern. Never downgrade below the factory load capacity stamped on the placard.

Going bigger without a lift?

A safe starting rule is to stay within about 3% diameter increase before checking actual lock-to-lock and compression clearance.

How to read a truck tire size

The sidewall tells you far more than diameter. It tells you construction type, width, sidewall height, load capacity, and whether the tire was built for passenger-duty or true truck-duty service.

That single line answers the questions most truck owners ask: Will it fit? Will it carry the load? Will it ride stiff? Is it a real truck tire or just a passenger tire on a truck?

LTService type

Light Truck construction. Built for higher load and inflation than passenger tires.

275Section width

The tire is about 275 mm wide at its widest point.

70Aspect ratio

Sidewall height is 70% of the 275 mm width.

RConstruction

Radial construction, standard on modern truck tires.

18Wheel diameter

Fits an 18-inch wheel only.

125/122Load index

Single / dual load index on some LT tires. Higher number = more carrying capacity.

SSpeed rating

Maximum speed capability for the tire when properly inflated and loaded.

ELoad range

Modern strength rating. E is commonly called 10-ply rated and usually supports up to 80 PSI.

A truck can come from the factory with P-metric tires, especially lighter-duty half-tons. Do not assume “it’s a truck” automatically means LT construction.

LT vs P-metric truck tires

This is the most misunderstood decision in truck fitment. Many owners upgrade to LT tires because they sound stronger, then hate the added harshness and weight. Others stay with soft passenger tires and discover trailer stability suffers.

Choose LT if...

You tow regularly near the truck’s real-world limits.

You carry tools, trailers, campers, or bed loads often.

You drive gravel, sharp rock, or job-site terrain and want stronger sidewalls.

Choose P-metric if...

Your truck is mostly a commuter or family vehicle.

You value comfort, wet braking, quiet highway manners, and lower cost.

You only tow lightly and the placard or replacement spec still meets the required load.

Truck tire load range chart

Load range is a strength category, not a literal count of plies. Modern tires still use the old “6-ply rated” or “10-ply rated” language, but what really matters is the load capacity at a specific inflation pressure.

Never choose a replacement tire with less load capacity than the original equipment requirement. Diameter fitment is irrelevant if the tire cannot safely carry the truck’s axle load.

Ford F-150 stock tire sizes

Modern F-150s span everything from work-truck 17-inch setups to premium 22-inch packages and true off-road 35-inch or 37-inch Raptor sizes. That is why “F-150 tire size” is not a single answer.

Biggest tires without a lift

This is the highest-intent truck tire question online, and the honest answer is never just a number. Real fitment depends on stock diameter, true mounted width, wheel width, wheel offset, alignment, mud flaps, crash bars, and how much the tire grows under compression.

Best rule: compare actual diameter first, then inspect clearance at straight ahead, full left lock, full right lock, and loaded compression. A tire that clears in the driveway may still hit at speed over a dip or with passengers, trailer tongue weight, or cargo.

Truck plus-sizing examples

Plus-sizing means increasing wheel diameter while keeping the tire’s overall diameter close to stock. It protects speedometer accuracy and gearing while changing appearance and sidewall height.

What bigger truck tires actually change

Bigger tires are not just a cosmetic mod. They change mechanical leverage, weight, braking feel, and the entire calibration baseline of the truck.

Speedometer error

A taller tire travels farther per wheel rotation, so the speedometer and odometer read low unless recalibrated.

Effective gearing

Bigger tires reduce the effective axle ratio. The truck feels taller-geared and slower off the line.

Braking distance

Heavier tires increase rotating mass and can lengthen stopping distances.

Fuel economy

Heavier, wider, and more aggressive tires often reduce MPG noticeably.

Steering feel

Wider tires and lower-offset wheels can increase kickback, scrub, tramlining, and bearing load.

Buying by diameter only

Two 33-inch tires can have very different width, load index, tread design, and real mounted size. Diameter alone is not enough.

Ignoring load index

The truck may physically fit the tire but still be unsafe for towing or payload if the load rating is lower than OEM.

Using extreme offset to clear suspension

Pushing the wheel outward can solve inner clearance but create outer rub, heavier steering, and more bearing stress.

Going straight to E-range for every truck

E-range sounds tough but often rides harsher and weighs more than the truck needs if it rarely tows or hauls.
