How to Use This Calculator
Decode Size tab
- Click any Lexus preset (225/45R18 → 285/50R20) or type a custom size (format: 245/40R18).
- Click "Calculate" to see overall diameter, sidewall height, circumference, revolutions per mile, and a scaled SVG profile.
- Click "Show formula & worked example" to see the exact arithmetic for your size.
- Use the Inches / Metric toggle at the top to switch all result units globally.
Compare Sizes tab
- Use the "Load stock size" quick-buttons (IS/ES/NX/RX) to populate Stock (A), or type your model's stock size manually.
- Enter your proposed upgrade size in the New (B) field.
- Click "Compare Sizes" to see the % diameter change, speedometer error, and AWD safety verdict.
- For AWD Lexus models (IS 300 AWD, NX, RX) keep diameter change within ±1% for hybrid/PHEV and ±3% for standard AWD.
Model Fitment tab
- Select your Lexus model (IS / ES / NX / RX) from the four cards.
- The model's full wheel specs appear: bolt pattern (5×114.3 for all), centre bore, stock offset, safe offset range.
- Enter a Width (mm), Aspect (%), and Rim size (in) in the check inputs, then click "Check Fitment."
- The badge shows clearance estimate. IS 350/500 can run wider rear tires (staggered) than front.
By Diameter tab
- Click an OEM diameter button (e.g. IS 350 245/40R18 = 25.72″) or type a target diameter and rim size.
- Click "Find Sizes" — the tool scans standard Lexus-range widths and aspects, returning every size within ±2%.
- The top result is the nearest match. Critical for AWD Lexus: matching front/rear diameters within ±1%.
Setup Guide tab
- Select your Lexus model to see setup-specific tire size recommendations.
- Review the four setup tiers: OEM Replacement, Summer Performance, Winter (dedicated set), Plus-1 Upgrade.
- Each tier shows the best size for your model and popular tire examples.
- For winter sets: IS owners typically go down to 17″ wheels to allow more sidewall and tire choice at lower cost.
Formula Reference — Tire Diameter, Speedo Error & AWD Rules
All calculations use standard industry formulas. AWD diameter rules reflect Lexus technical service guidance for hybrid and PHEV models.
Metric Tire (e.g. 245/40R18 — IS 350 F-Sport front): Sidewall (mm) = Width × Aspect ÷ 100 = 245 × 0.40 = 98.0 mm Overall Diameter = Rim × 25.4 + 2 × Sidewall = 457.2 + 196.0 = 653.2 mm = 25.72″ Circumference (in) = π × 25.72 = 80.80″ Revs / Mile = 63,360 ÷ 80.80 = 784 IS 350 Staggered Rear (275/35R18): Sidewall (mm) = 275 × 0.35 = 96.25 mm Overall Diameter = 457.2 + 192.5 = 649.7 mm = 25.58″ Diameter difference = 25.72 − 25.58 = 0.14″ (0.5%) — within AWD tolerance ✓ Speedometer Error (%): Error = (New Diameter ÷ Stock Diameter − 1) × 100 Larger tire → speedometer reads LOW (you are going faster than displayed). IS 300 AWD 225/45R18 → 245/40R19: Error = (26.47 ÷ 25.97 − 1) × 100 = +1.9% (AWD-safe ✓) AWD Diameter Rule (Lexus hybrid/PHEV — IS 300 AWD, NX 450h+, RX 450h+): Maximum safe mismatch: ±1% diameter between front and rear axles. Exceeding this threshold can trigger AWD fault codes and cause differential wear. Bolt Pattern — IS / ES / NX / RX (most models): IS (2014+): 5×114.3 | Centre bore: 60.1mm | Lug torque: 76 ft-lb ES (2019+): 5×114.3 | Centre bore: 60.1mm | Lug torque: 76 ft-lb NX (2022+): 5×114.3 | Centre bore: 60.1mm | Lug torque: 76 ft-lb RX (2023+): 5×114.3 | Centre bore: 60.1mm | Lug torque: 76 ft-lb GX (2024+): 6×139.7 | Centre bore: 106.1mm LX (2022+): 6×139.7 | Centre bore: 110mm → IS, ES, NX, RX wheels are bolt-pattern compatible (5×114.3) — verify diameter and offset before swapping.
Lexus Tire Sizing — The Complete Model Guide
Lexus models split into two distinct wheel families: the sedan and SUV lineup (IS, ES, NX, RX) all share a 5×114.3 bolt patternwith 60.1mm centre bore, while the body-on-frame trucks (GX, LX) use 6×139.7. This means most aftermarket and OEM Lexus wheels are cross-compatible within the IS/ES/NX/RX family — a key advantage when sourcing a dedicated winter wheel set.
The IS 350 and IS 500 F-Sport are the only Lexus models to use staggered fitment from the factory: a wider 275/35R18 on the rear versus 245/40R18 on the front. Both sizes produce a nearly identical diameter (25.58″ rear vs 25.72″ front — 0.5% difference), which is within AWD tolerance. The practical upside is a wider rear contact patch for the rear-biased AWD handling balance. The downside: tires cannot be rotated front-to-rear, which accelerates rear wear. Many IS 350 owners switch to a square 245/40R18 setup specifically to enable rotation.
The ES 250 and ES 300h use 235/45R18 on 18-inch wheels, while the ES 350 F-Sport upgrades to 235/40R19 on 19-inch wheels. Both produce nearly the same overall diameter (26.33″ and 26.40″), which is why the speedometer reads accurately across ES trim levels. The ES is FWD on base trims and AWD on the ES 250 AWD — the AWD variant requires matched front and rear diameters if upgrading.
The NX 250 and NX 350h run 235/55R18 (28.18″ diameter), while the NX 350 F-Sport and PHEV NX 450h+ use 235/50R19 (28.25″ diameter). The ±0.07″ difference between trims is why different NX wheels can appear interchangeable — they essentially are, on the NX platform. Critical for NX 450h+ PHEV owners: the electric rear motor makes tire diameter matching within ±1% essential to avoid stress on the e-axle and associated fault codes.
For winter tire sets across all IS/ES/NX/RX models, the standard approach is to go one rim size smaller (e.g., IS on 17″ for winter vs 18″ stock) — this allows a taller sidewall (better snow traction, more absorption over ice ruts), reduces the cost of winter tires, and if the winter set gets kerbed, the financial impact is lower. The calculator's Setup Guide tab provides the specific recommended winter sizes for each model.
