Includes crucial tips for maintaining AWD system health through proper tire selection and maintenance.
Key Tools for Subaru Owners
Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system performs best when all tires are closely matched in size. These tools help ensure compatibility and performance.
Important Tips for Subaru Owners:
- AWD System Health: It is crucial to use tires with very similar (ideally identical) rolling circumferences. Significant differences can strain the center differential. Replace all four tires at once if possible.
- Wilderness & Off-Road: For Outback Wilderness, Forester Wilderness, and Crosstrek models, consider All-Terrain (A/T) tires for enhanced capability. Our Flotation Tire Converter might be useful for some A/T sizes.
- Performance Models (WRX/STI): For these models, prioritize high-performance summer or all-season tires with appropriate speed ratings. See our Performance Tire Guide for more info.
- Check Your Placard: Always refer to your Subaru's doorjamb sticker for OEM tire size and pressure recommendations.
Stock tire sizes for the most popular Subaru models. On Subaru Symmetrical AWD, all four tires must stay within ~1% OD of each other — use these as your matching baseline.
| Model | Year | Stock Tire Size | OD |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outback (base) | 2020–2024 | 225/65R17 | 28.5" |
| Outback XT / Touring | 2020–2024 | 225/60R18 | 28.6" |
| Outback Wilderness | 2022–2024 | 245/60R17 | 29.6" |
| WRX | 2022–2024 | 235/45R18 | 26.3" |
| Forester | 2019–2024 | 225/55R17 / 225/55R18 | 26.7" / 27.7" |
| Crosstrek | 2024–2025 | 225/55R18 | 27.7" |
⚠️ Subaru AWD rule: all four tires must have matching OD (within ~0.25" / ~1%). Mismatched diameters can damage the center differential. Use the Tire Size Converter below to verify before purchasing.
Outback — All-terrain upgrade
Replace the stock 225/65R17 (28.5" OD) with a 235/65R17 AT tire (29.0" OD, +0.5"). The ~1.8% OD increase is at the edge of Subaru's AWD tolerance — confirm with your dealer and replace all four simultaneously. Popular choices: Falken Wildpeak AT3W, BFGoodrich All-Terrain KO2.
WRX — Winter/dedicated set
The critical rule: your winter tires must match the stock 235/45R18 OD (26.3") within ~0.25". Safe options on a second set of 18" rims: 235/45R18 winter or 225/50R18 (OD 26.6", +0.3"). Avoid dropping to 17" rims — the OD gap is too large for Subaru AWD.
Forester — Mild size upgrade
From stock 225/55R17 (26.7" OD), a 225/60R17 (27.5" OD, +0.8") gives slightly more ground clearance and a cushier ride — a common move for Forester owners who do light gravel roads. Verify OD match before purchase and replace all four tires.
