BMW Tire Quick Reference
Common BMW tire questions answered in one line. Expand the sections below for full detail.
xDrive tire swap
Keep all four rolling diameters within 1% of each other. A 3/32″ tread depth difference across axles can stress the transfer case.
M series staggered setup
M3/M4 (G80/G82): 275/35R19 front, 285/30R20 rear (OEM 18/19 combo is 275/40R18 + 285/35R19). Never rotate staggered tires side-to-side.
Replace run-flats with conventional?
Yes, but you must add a TPMS-compatible spare or a tire inflation kit. Conventional tires give better ride quality and cost 20-40% less.
Star-mark (★) tires required?
No — BMW-star-approved tires are recommended but not mandatory. Non-star tires are safe provided they match the OEM size exactly.
Winter tires on xDrive
Fit all four corners. AWD does not compensate for summer-compound tires in sub-7 °C / 45 °F conditions. Go one rim size down (e.g., 18″ → 17″) for deeper sidewall.
BMW bolt pattern quick check
E/F-chassis (most pre-2018): 5×120, centerbore 72.56 mm. G-chassis (2018+): 5×112, centerbore 66.6 mm. Never mix patterns with adapters on daily drivers.
OEM Tire Sizes by BMW Model
Factory tire sizes for current and recent BMW models. Sizes may vary by trim level and optional wheel packages. Always cross-check against the door jamb sticker on your specific vehicle.

BMW xDrive Tire Rules
BMW xDrive is a full-time AWD system that continuously distributes torque between axles. Unlike part-time AWD, it is always active — meaning mismatched tire diameters create constant mechanical stress on the transfer case.
The 1% Rolling Diameter Rule
BMW specifies that the rolling diameter difference between front and rear tires must not exceed 1% on xDrive vehicles. Most technicians recommend staying under 0.5% as a safety margin.
Practically: a 3/32" (2.4 mm) tread depth difference between axles is enough to approach the limit on some setups.
Use our Tire Size Comparison tool to calculate rolling diameter before choosing a staggered setup.
xDrive Staggered Setup: Safe Pairs
Combinations with ≤0.5% rolling diameter difference:
- ✓ 275/40R19 F + 315/35R19 R → 0.1% diff
- ✓ 245/45R19 F + 275/40R19 R → 0.3% diff
- ✓ 285/30R20 F + 295/30R20 R → 0.3% diff (G80 M3 xDrive)
- ✗ 225/45R18 F + 255/35R18 R → 1.8% diff — avoid
Tread wear note: BMW indicates a maximum 2 mm tread depth difference between all wheel positions on xDrive models. Replace tires in axle pairs (never just one) to maintain balance.
M Series Staggered Fitment Guide
All BMW M cars use staggered fitment from the factory — wider tires at the rear to maximise traction under acceleration. Key rules: do not rotate staggered directional tires side-to-side; track setups may use square fitments for rotation capability.

Run-Flat vs. Conventional Tires
Many BMWs leave the factory without a spare wheel — they rely on Run-Flat Technology (RFT) or Run-flat System Component (RSC) tires that can be driven up to 80 km / 50 miles at 80 km/h / 50 mph after a complete puncture.
| Factor | Run-Flat (RFT/RSC) | Conventional |
|---|---|---|
| After puncture | Drive up to 80 km at 80 km/h | Must stop immediately |
| Ride quality | Stiffer — reinforced sidewalls | Noticeably more comfortable |
| Cost | 20–40% more expensive | Standard pricing |
| Weight | 4–7 kg heavier per tire | Lighter |
| Repairability | Generally not repairable | Often repairable |
| Spare requirement | No spare needed | Spare or inflation kit required |
| TPMS required? | Required (mandatory) | Required (mandatory) |
| Availability | Limited — not all sizes/brands | Full market availability |
BMW Star-Mark (★) Tire Guide
The BMW star mark — a small ★ on the tire sidewall — means the tire has been developed in collaboration with BMW engineers and tested to specific acoustic, handling, and rolling-resistance targets for a particular model. Brands with current BMW star-mark approvals include:
Bridgestone
Turanza 6, Potenza Sport, Blizzak LM005
Continental
SportContact 7, EcoContact 6 Q, WinterContact TS 860 S
Goodyear
Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6, Vector 4Seasons Gen-3
Hankook
Ventus S1 evo3, Kinergy 4S2
Michelin
Pilot Sport 5, e.Primacy, Pilot Alpin 5
Pirelli
P Zero (PZ4), P Zero Winter, Cinturato P7
Dunlop
SP Sport Maxx RT2, SP Winter Sport 5
Nexen
N'Fera Sport (select models)
Are star-mark tires mandatory? No. They are BMW's recommended OEM choice, but any tire matching the exact OEM size and load/speed rating is mechanically safe. Non-star tires from reputable brands (including all eight above without the star on non-BMW-specific variants) are widely used.
How to identify a star-marked tire: Look for a small ★ or * stamped on the tire sidewall, usually near the size code. On Michelin, it appears as MOE (run-flat) combined with a star.

Seasonal Tire Guide for BMW
Choosing the right tire compound for the season is more important for BMWs than for most cars — especially on performance-tuned suspension where the tire is the primary contact patch.
☀️ Summer Tires
Best for: Above 7 °C / 45 °F
Advantage: Maximum dry/wet grip, sharpest handling
BMW use case: M cars, track days, sporty driving
Recommended: Michelin Pilot Sport 5 ★, Pirelli P Zero PZ4 ★, Continental SportContact 7 ★
Winter Tires
Best for: Below 7 °C / 45 °F, snow, ice
Advantage: Flexible compound stays grippy in cold
BMW tip: Go one rim size smaller (e.g., 19″ → 18″) for deeper sidewall
Look for Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) symbol. Recommended: Bridgestone Blizzak LM005 ★, Continental WinterContact TS 860 S ★
🔄 All-Season Tires
Best for: Mild climates, light winter conditions
Advantage: One set year-round, no seasonal swap
BMW caveat: Not ideal for M cars or performance-oriented driving in rain
Recommended: Michelin CrossClimate 2 ★, Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 ★, Continental AllSeasonContact 2
