Which generation do you have?

DS/Classic (2009–2021 carryover) and DT (2019–present 5th gen) are different trucks with different clearances and bolt patterns.

Tradesman, Big Horn, Laramie?

Street trims use 17" or 18" wheels with P-metric or light LT tires. 20" and 22" are appearance upgrades with lower-profile rubber.

Rebel, Warlock, RHO?

These trims leave the factory close to or at 33" territory — so your upgrade headroom is smaller than you think.

Want 33s on a DT?

Many stock DT 1500s can fit true 33-inch tires with no modifications, especially on 18" wheels with close-to-stock offset.

RAM truck generations at a glance

Before looking up any RAM tire size, you need to know which generation you have. The RAM 1500 Classic (DS) and the current 5th-gen DT are sold side by side — and they are not the same truck. HD trucks are a completely separate family.

DS / 1500 Classic

2009–2021 (carried over)

Rear suspension: Standard coil rear springs, traditional half-ton geometry
OEM diameter range: Mostly 31–32 inch range depending on trim and package
Bolt pattern: 5×139.7 mm (5×5.5")

Still sold as the 1500 Classic alongside the DT. Simpler architecture but many owners still run 33s with minimal work.

DT (5th Gen 1500)

2019–present

Rear suspension: Coil rear suspension — a first for a RAM 1500
OEM diameter range: Range from ~31" (base) to ~35" (RHO, factory Goodyear)
Bolt pattern: 5×139.7 mm (5×5.5")

The coil rear actually tightens clearance compared to the leafspring DS. Rebel and Warlock already run larger OEM tires. Check which sub-model carefully.

RAM 2500 HD

2010–present

Rear suspension: Solid front axle, leaf rear — body-on-frame HD
OEM diameter range: LT245/70R17 to LT285/70R17 standard; 18" and 20" on premium trims
Bolt pattern: 8×165.1 mm (8×6.5")

Power Wagon ships with LT285/70R17 as OEM. HD suspension architecture means far more upgrade headroom than 1500.

RAM 3500 HD

2010–present

Rear suspension: Solid front axle, dual rear wheel option, heavy-duty frame
OEM diameter range: LT245/70R17 up to LT285/60R20 depending on SRW vs DRW
Bolt pattern: 8×165.1 mm (SRW); 8×200 mm (DRW)

SRW and DRW have completely different fitment rules. Load index is critical — never reduce below OEM on any tow-rated HD spec.

RAM 1500 and RAM 2500/3500 bolt patterns are completely different. The 1500 uses 5-lug; the HD trucks use 8-lug. Wheels, brakes, and spacers are not interchangeable between them.

RAM 1500 DT (5th gen, 2019–present) stock sizes by trim

The DT generation launched in 2019 with a coil rear suspension and a wider range of factory tire sizes than any previous RAM 1500. Stock diameter ranges from roughly 30.5" on base trims to a factory 35" on the RHO.

Key insight for DT upgrades:The DT's coil rear suspension creates inner wheel-well geometry that can be tighter than the older DS leafspring platform for very wide tires. The radius rod position is the main inner clearance constraint — width matters as much as height on DT 1500 fitment.

RAM 1500 Classic (DS, 2009–2021) stock sizes

The Classic is the 4th-generation body sold alongside the DT. It retained the traditional leafspring rear, which gives it slightly different inner clearance behavior. It was discontinued in Canada after 2021 but continued in the US as a budget option.

RAM 2500 stock tire sizes by trim

The RAM 2500's solid front axle and body-on-frame HD architecture means it starts with larger OEM tires and has considerably more upgrade headroom than the half-ton. Load index compliance matters most on these trucks.

RAM 3500 stock tire sizes (SRW and DRW)

The RAM 3500 is available in both single rear wheel (SRW) and dual rear wheel (DRW) configurations. DRW fitment rules are completely separate — the eight tire positions must all be matched by size and load index, and the bolt pattern is different again.

On RAM 3500 DRW trucks: all eight tires must be the same size, load rating, and construction. Mixing tires on a dually creates asymmetric load capacity and handling imbalance — this is a safety issue, not just a fitment preference.

Biggest tires without a lift — RAM edition

The DT 1500 is one of the better stock-height fitment platforms in the segment, partly because the Rebel and Warlock trims already run 33" OEM. But "what fits a Rebel" and "what fits a Big Horn" are not the same answer.

RAM 1500 DT — street trims (Tradesman, Big Horn, Laramie)

Stock diameter: ~31–32.4"Max no-lift: 33–33.5" with correct offset

LT275/70R18 or 285/65R18 often fit well at close-to-stock offset. Wider tires (LT305 class) risk inner radius rod contact under compression.

Watch for: Fender liner contact at full lock under compression. Front mud flap vs tire corner. Radius rod / upper control arm clearance on 4WD models.

RAM 1500 DT — Rebel (factory 33")

Stock diameter: ~33.2"Max no-lift: 33.5–34" absolute max stock

The Rebel leaves the factory right at the limit. Width is the bigger issue — the Rebel can sometimes run 295/70R18 but rubs depend on exact offset.

Watch for: Rebel already has minimal clearance. Wider tire = inner contact before a taller tire causes trouble.

RAM 1500 DT — with 2" leveling kit

Stock diameter: N/A (leveled)Max no-lift: 33–35" depending on width and offset

Bilstein 5100 or quality leveling spacers open up true 35" fitment. LT295/70R18 or 35×12.5R18 fit most DT trucks after leveling with minor liner work.

Watch for: Still need to verify offset — very low-offset aftermarket wheels + wide tires + leveling kit = cumulative interference risk.

RAM 1500 Classic DS

Stock diameter: ~30.6–32.4"Max no-lift: 33–33.5" typically manageable

DS platform is leafspring rear and older coil front — slightly more predictable than DT for fitment. Can run LT275/70R18 or 285/65R18 without lift on many configurations.

Watch for: DS has less aggressive suspension geometry. Verify at full steering lock and compressed.

RAM 2500 HD

Stock diameter: ~30.5–33.5"Max no-lift: 35–37" is achievable on the HD platform with suspension headroom

HD solid front axle architecture provides considerably more clearance headroom. Power Wagon specifically has been known to run 35×12.5 without modification.

Watch for: HD trucks still require load index matching. Going to a much heavier tire on a truck that tows heavily changes braking and gearing meaningfully.

Best practice: Check clearance at (1) straight-ahead static, (2) full left lock, (3) full right lock, and (4) both lock positions with the suspension fully compressed (load the truck or push down by hand). The static check is the least useful of the four.

RAM tire type by use case

The RAM 1500 serves a wider range of real-world roles than almost any other truck — luxury commuter, off-road rig, tow vehicle, and job-site hauler all in the same lineup. The right tire type is completely different for each role.

Daily driver / commuter

All-season P-metric or light LT highway

Example size: P275/65R18, P275/55R20

Quieter, lighter, better wet traction, better fuel economy. Factory or near-factory load index is fine for light use.

All-terrain LT load range D or E

Towing and payload work

Load capacity under trailer tongue weight and axle load requires E-range minimum on heavy tow rigs. Highway tread keeps temperature low at highway speeds.

Common RAM tire fitment mistakes

These are the mistakes RAM owners make most often — and most can be avoided with 5 minutes of research before ordering.

Using Rebel or TRX / RHO fitment as a baseline

These trims run dramatically larger tires than any other RAM 1500. Forums full of "33s fit no problem" comments often come from Rebel owners. On a Big Horn or Tradesman, the stock diameter is 2–3 inches smaller — your clearance math is completely different.

Confusing DT and DS fitment

The 5th-gen DT (2019+) and the 4th-gen Classic DS have different suspension geometries, different inner radius rod positions, and different front clearance envelopes. A fitment that works on a DS may not clear on the same-size DT.

Ignoring load index on a tow rig

RAM 2500 and 3500 owners especially: downgrading load index to fit a budget tire is not a compromise — it is a safety issue. The door placard specifies the minimum required load index for your truck's GVWR and payload class.

Going wide before going tall

On the DT 1500, inner clearance (radius rod, UCA, brake line) often fails before height clearance does. A 295/70R18 may rub inside before a 285/75R18 does. Width is often the binding constraint on DT trucks.

Skipping recalibration

RAM's UConnect system ties into speedometer, odometer, transmission shift points, and some ADAS features. A 3"+ diameter jump changes calibration meaningfully and should be corrected with a tuner or PCM recalibration.

Choosing 22-inch wheels for off-road builds

22" wheels are OEM on Laramie and Tungsten trim — they are appearance packages, not off-road geometry. Bigger wheels with low-profile tires have less sidewall flex, absorb impacts harder, and give you less room to air down off-road.
