Quick Answer

Tesla tire sizes vary by model and wheel package. The most common OEM sizes are 235/45R18 and 235/40R19 on Model 3, 255/45R19 and 255/40R20 on Model Y, and 285/65R20 on Cybertruck. All Tesla tires (except Cybertruck) must be XL-rated and inflated to 42 PSI cold (45 PSI for Model X, 50 PSI for Cybertruck).

Model / TrimWheelOEM Tire SizePSINote
Model 3 LR (2024 Highland)19" Nova235/40R19 XL42 PSIMost common M3 variant globally
Model Y LR AWD19" Gemini255/45R19 XL42 PSIBest range option for MY
Model S LR (2021+)19" Cardenio Aero255/45R19 F / 285/40R19 R XL42 PSIStaggered — max range fitment
Model X LR (2021+)20" Cyberstream255/45R20 XL45 PSISquare setup — higher PSI than M3/MY
Cybertruck AWD20" Cyber Wheel285/65R20 (All-Season)50 PSINo XL req. — truck-spec BP: 6×139.7

All sizes above are for the most common trim/wheel combination. Use the full OEM Lookup tab below for every generation, trim, and wheel option including staggered setups.

Tesla EV Requirements: All Tesla tires (except Cybertruck) must be XL (Extra Load) rated and inflated to 42 PSI cold (45 PSI for Model X, 50 PSI for Cybertruck). Standard load tires will cause premature wear and may void your warranty.

How Tesla Tire Sizes Are Calculated — The Formula

Overall Diameter (in) = Rim Diameter + 2 × Sidewall Height
Sidewall Height (in)  = (Section Width mm × Aspect Ratio%) ÷ 2540
Circumference (in)    = π × Overall Diameter
Revs/Mile             = 63,360 ÷ Circumference
Example — 235/45R18:
  Sidewall = (235 × 0.45) ÷ 25.4 = 4.13 in
  OD       = 18 + (2 × 4.13) = 26.27 in
  Circ     = π × 26.27 = 82.55 in
  Rev/mi   = 63,360 ÷ 82.55 = 767
  • Section Width (235) — tread width in millimetres, measured sidewall-to-sidewall at the widest point.
  • Aspect Ratio (45) — sidewall height as a percentage of section width. 45 means sidewall = 235 × 0.45 = 105.75 mm = 4.16 in.
  • Rim Diameter (R18) — wheel diameter in inches. Tesla uses 18–22\" depending on model and trim.
  • XL / Extra Load— reinforced sidewall construction required for Tesla's heavier EV platform. Never substitute Standard Load (SL) tires.

How to Use the Tesla Tire Size Calculator

  1. 1Select your Tesla model: Click Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X, or Cybertruck on the OEM Lookup tab. All trims and generations for that model appear instantly.
  2. 2Read your OEM tire size: Find your generation and trim in the table. The Front and Rear columns show the exact OEM size code. The OD column shows the calculated outer diameter in inches for quick comparison.
  3. 3Compare a new tire size (optional): Go to the Size Diff tab. Enter your current stock size and the proposed new size. The calculator shows outer diameter delta, EV Safety badge, estimated range impact, speedometer correction table, and a visual comparison.
  4. 4Use a Quick Swap preset: Common Tesla size changes (e.g. Model 3 18"→19", Model Y 19"→21") are pre-loaded as one-click presets in the Size Diff tab to save time.
  5. 5Check Range Impact: The Range Impact tab compares all wheel configs for your model with EPA range estimates, Wh/100mi, rolling resistance, noise level, and cost per tire — helping you choose between efficiency and aesthetics.
  6. 6Verify bolt pattern and fitment: The Bolt Pattern tab shows the correct bolt pattern (5×114.3, 5×120, or 6×139.7), center bore, lug thread size, and torque spec for every Tesla — essential before ordering aftermarket wheels.

Tesla-Specific Tire Rules Every Owner Should Know

✓ XL Rating is Mandatory

All Model 3, Y, S, and X tires must be XL (Extra Load) rated. Teslas weigh 20–35% more than comparable ICE vehicles due to battery mass. Standard Load tires cannot safely support the sidewall stress and will fail prematurely.

⚡ 42 PSI Cold — Always

Inflate to 42 PSI cold (before driving) for Model 3 and Model Y, 45 PSI for Model X, and 50 PSI for Cybertruck. Check in the morning. After driving 5+ miles, tire pressure rises 2–4 PSI — never deflate from a warm reading.

🔇 Acoustic Foam Tires

Many Tesla OEM fitments use foam-lined tires that reduce cabin resonance noise by ~9 dB. Replacing them with non-foam tires will noticeably increase road noise. Look for the acoustic foam symbol on the sidewall or 'A/S' marking when ordering replacements.

🔄 Staggered = Side-to-Side Only

Performance variants (M3 Performance, MS Arachnid, MX Turbine) have different front and rear sizes. You can only rotate side-to-side (front-left to rear-left), not front-to-rear. This halves the rotation benefit and means rear tires wear faster. Factor in higher replacement frequency.

📏 Stay Within ±3% OD

Tesla's internal guideline allows up to 3% overall diameter variance before TPMS errors and odometer inaccuracy become significant. Use the Size Diff tab above to check your specific proposed swap before purchasing.

🔧 Recalibrate After Size Change

After fitting a new tire size, go to Touchscreen → Controls → Service → Wheel & Tire Configuration to update Tesla's software. For sizes not in the preset list, visit a Tesla Service Center. This corrects range estimates and speedometer accuracy.
