Handling & Profile

We have no official source on tire profile and handling. Michelin says a radial tire is identified by the letter R, is needed for powerful vehicles with very rigid chassis and sporty purposes, and that the construction must match what the motorcycle manufacturer specifies.

Operating Temperature

Dunlop says new tires should not be subjected to maximum power, abrupt lean-over or hard cornering until approximately 100 miles have been covered, and that speed ratings are not valid for damaged, altered, repaired, excessively worn, underinflated or overloaded tires. Michelin publishes recommended track pressures for its track tires.

Street vs. Track

Michelin says competition tires usually carry the acronym NHS (Not for Highway Service), which indicates that they are not approved for road use. On the road you are legally committed to the dimensions recommended by the motorcycle manufacturer (Michelin).

Important Considerations

Always adhere to your motorcycle manufacturer's recommended tire sizes, load ratings, and speed ratings. Load index and speed rating letters are decoded on the load index chart and the speed rating lookup.

Check and maintain correct tire pressures. Dunlop says checking tire pressure is the most important tire maintenance function; check cold. The PSI to kPa converter handles units, and a tire's age can be read with the DOT code decoder.

Ensure front and rear tires are a matched pair or are confirmed by the manufacturer to be compatible.
