Miata Tire Size Calculator
The most complete tire tool for NA, NB, NC, and ND MX-5 owners. Decode any metric size, compare stock vs new with live speedometer correction, check generation-specific fender clearance, find sizes by target diameter, and get track-day compound recommendations — all in one place.
Quick Example
An ND MX-5 running stock 205/45R17 tires has an overall diameter of 24.32 inches (617.8 mm). Swapping to the popular 215/45R17 upgrade increases diameter to 24.72 inches (+1.65%) — well within the safe ±3% threshold for this RWD platform. The speedometer will read about 1 mph low at 60 mph. Fender clearance is maintained with no modification required. For the NC generation, the go-to upgrade is 225/45R17 on a 17×8 ET45 — a 1.9% diameter gain over the stock 205/45R17 that fits without body mods and is the most commonly reported "safe" daily setup on Miata forums.

- The generation's full wheel specs panel appears: bolt pattern, centre bore, stock offset, safe offset range, max rim width, and the community-tested recommended upgrade.
- Enter a Width (mm), Aspect (%), and Rim size (in) in the check inputs, then click "Check Fitment."
- The fender clearance badge tells you instantly: No mods / Roll fenders / Flares needed / Extreme modification required.
- The safety badge and diameter delta table show how the size compares to the generation's top OEM size.
By Diameter tab
- Click an OEM diameter button (e.g. ND 205/45R17 = 24.32″) or type a target diameter and rim size.
- Click "Find Sizes" — the tool scans all standard metric widths (155–255mm) and aspect ratios (35–70%), returning every size within ±2% sorted by closest match.
- The top result (highlighted in green) is the nearest match. Use this to find a metric equivalent when you know the inch diameter from a measurement.
Track Advisor tab
- Select your Miata generation.
- Review the four compound tiers from Daily Driver through Full Race.
- Each tier shows the best size for your specific generation, UTQG rating, popular tire examples, pros/cons, and cold/hot pressure starting points.
- Refer to the Track Tire Pressure table to set your cold starting pressure before going on track — then adjust after 2–3 warm-up laps to hit the target hot pressure.
Formula Reference — Tire Diameter, Speedo Error & Fitment Thresholds
All calculations are based on standard industry formulas. The fender clearance thresholds reflect community-verified fitment data from Miata.net, r/Miata, and ThreePiece.us — not absolute guarantees, as suspension setup and trim level can affect real-world clearance.
Metric Tire (e.g. 205/45R17): Sidewall (mm) = Width × Aspect ÷ 100 = 205 × 0.45 = 92.25 mm Overall Diameter = Rim × 25.4 + 2 × Sidewall = 431.8 + 184.5 = 616.3 mm = 24.27″ Circumference (in) = π × 24.27 = 76.25″ Revs / Mile = 63,360 ÷ 76.25 = 831 Speedometer Error (%): Error = (New Diameter ÷ Stock Diameter − 1) × 100 Larger tire → speedometer reads LOW (you are going faster than shown). Smaller tire → speedometer reads HIGH (you are going slower than shown). Ground Clearance Gain: Clearance Gain = Diameter Delta ÷ 2 (2 inches of additional diameter = 1 inch more clearance at the axle.) Fender Clearance Width Thresholds (community-verified): NA / NB: ≤215mm = no mods | 216–225mm = roll fenders | 226–245mm = flares NC: ≤235mm = no mods | 236–245mm = roll fenders | 246–265mm = flares ND: ≤215mm = no mods | 216–225mm = tight / roll | 226+mm = flares Bolt Pattern (critical — NC is NOT compatible with NA/NB/ND): NA (1989–1997): 4×100 | Centre bore: 54.1mm NB (1999–2005): 4×100 | Centre bore: 54.1mm NC (2006–2015): 5×114.3 | Centre bore: 67.1mm ← DIFFERENT ND (2016–present): 4×100 | Centre bore: 54.1mm
Miata Tire Sizing — The Complete Generation-by-Generation Guide
The Mazda MX-5 Miata has used four distinctly different factory tire setups across its four generations — and critically, the NC (2006–2015) uses a completely different bolt pattern from every other generation. Understanding which sizes work, which require fender modification, and which will affect the speedometer is essential before buying wheels or tires for any Miata.
The NA (1989–1997) started on modest 185/60R14 rubber and was later offered with 205/55R15 on the R-Package. Because the NA has one of the smallest engine bays and fender openings of any generation, the practical no-modification limit is 215mm width. The go-to performance upgrade is a 15×8 ET25 wheel with 205/50R15 tires — this is flush, clears the fenders without rolling, and unlocks the full 15-inch R-compound catalog (Hoosier SM7, Toyo RR, Yokohama A048).
The NB (1999–2005) shares the NA's 4×100 bolt pattern and 54.1mm centre bore, making wheels fully interchangeable. The NB body is marginally wider and many owners report 15×8 ET25–ET30 fitment is slightly more forgiving than on the NA. The Mazdaspeed NB introduced a 205/45R16 fitment — the largest OEM Miata tire up to that point — and opened the door to 16-inch plus-sizing on the NB platform.
The NC (2006–2015) is the generation that catches most buyers off guard: it switched to a 5×114.3 bolt pattern, shared with the Mazda6 and RX-8 of the same era, but incompatible with every other Miata. The NC also gained significant body width, which is why it can comfortably run 235–245mm tires with only minor fender rolling — wider than any other generation. The 225/45R17 on 17×8 ET45 is the most widely reported safe daily upgrade, adding 1.9% diameter over stock with no modification required.
The ND (2016–present) returned to the 4×100 bolt pattern, making ND wheels compatible with NA and NB (though the ND's larger brakes may cause clearance issues with some older 14- and 15-inch designs). The ND is notably narrower than the NC, which brings the no-mod width limit back down to 215mm. The most universally safe ND upgrade is 215/45R17 on a 17×8 ET45 wheel — a +1.65% diameter increase that clears the fenders cleanly and is below the speedometer error threshold most owners consider acceptable without recalibration.
For track use, the 15-inch format remains dominant on NA and NB Miatas because the larger sidewall ratio provides more mechanical grip feedback and the 15-inch tire market has an unusually deep selection of R-compound options. On NC and ND platforms where 17-inch is the factory size, the 225/45R17 in R-compound (Hankook RS4, Nankang NS-2R) is the workhorse track setup — wide enough for grip, still legal for most competitive classes, and available in enough compounds to suit everything from a first HPDE to a regional racing series.
