How to Use the F-150 Tire Size Calculator

  1. 1

    Pick your F-150 trim

Select XLT, Lariat, Raptor, or Lightning to load OEM stock sizes and bolt pattern data.

  2. 2

    Decode your current tire

Enter your tire code (e.g., 265/70R17) in the Decode tab. Get exact diameter, sidewall height, revs per mile, and metric conversions.

  3. 3

    Compare stock vs. upgrade size

Use the Compare tab to see the exact diameter difference, speedometer error percentage, and AWD safety rating for any two sizes.

  4. 4

    Check fitment for your trim

The Fitment tab shows fender clearance status (no mod / roll / flare) and flags Lightning IRS diameter limits.

  5. 5

    Explore the Lift Guide

The Lift Guide tab shows the best tire size for each lift height per trim, with pros/cons and popular tire recommendations.

How the Calculator Works

All calculations use the standard tire diameter formula: Diameter = (2 × Width × Aspect/100 / 25.4) + Rim

Worked example — XLT stock 265/70R17

  • Sidewall: 265 × 0.70 = 185.5 mm ÷ 25.4 = 7.30″
  • Diameter: 17 + (2 × 7.30) = 31.61″
  • Upgrade 285/70R17: 285 × 0.70 = 199.5 mm ÷ 25.4 = 7.854″; 17 + (2 × 7.854) = 32.71″
  • Delta: 32.71 − 31.61 = +1.10″ (+3.5%) — below AWD ±5% limit, no recalibration required

Lightning EV matched-set rule

The Lightning uses IRS (independent rear suspension). All four tires must be the same size — diameter mismatch between front and rear stresses the AWD torque vectoring system. Larger tires reduce range ~2–3% per inch of added diameter. No lift kits are available for the Lightning.

F-150 Tire Guide: Trim-by-Trim Overview

XL / XLT — The Most Common Build Platform

The XLT 4WD is the most popular F-150 for tire upgrades. Stock 265/70R17 is a capable all-terrain baseline, but the community consensus on F150Forum is to step up to 285/70R17 (32.71″) without any lift — it clears on most 4WD builds and adds +1.1″ of ground clearance. Adding a 2" leveling kit opens the door to 305/65R17 (33.6″), the most popular aggressive build for XLT owners who want 33s without the complexity of a full lift kit.

Lariat / King Ranch / Platinum — 20" and 22" Challenges

Lariat and King Ranch trim the wheel well differently than the 17" XLT. Popular upgrades on 20" wheels are 285/55R20 (32.34″) for a mild plus-size, or 295/60R20 (33.09″) with a leveling kit. Platinum and Limited owners on 22" wheels have limited options — the low-profile sizing means plus-sizing risks rim damage on rough terrain. For these trims, consider dropping to 20" beadlocks for off-road builds.

Raptor — Factory 35s and the 37" Raptor R

The Raptor is the starting point for most extreme F-150 builds. The standard Raptor's 315/70R17 (34.36″) fits because of factory FOX shocks and wide-body flares that add 6″ of track width. The Raptor R takes this further with factory 37×12.50R17 Goodyear Territory MT rubber. Most Raptor owners upgrade to 37×12.50R17 matched-set, or stretch to 37×13.50R17 with minor fender trimming.

Lightning EV — IRS Limits and Range Math

The Lightning EV is the most constrained trim for tire modifications. Its independent rear suspension (IRS) physically prevents lift kits. All four tires must be the same size — the AWD system's torque vectoring faults on diameter mismatch. The most common upgrade is from 275/45R22 (Platinum OEM at 31.73″) or 275/50R22 (Pro/XLT/Lariat OEM at 32.83″) to 285/50R22 as a matched set. Every inch of added diameter reduces EPA range estimate by approximately 2–3%.
