BMW Tire Size Calculator

Compare OEM vs aftermarket sizes for any BMW — with xDrive 1% rolling diameter compliance check built in.

By TireCalculatorHub Editorial Team·Updated: February 21, 2026

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

A BMW 3 Series (G20) M Sport leaves the factory on 225/45R18 front and 255/40R18 rear tires — rolling diameters of 25.97" and 26.03" respectively, a difference of just 0.21% — well within BMW's xDrive 1% tolerance. Swapping the fronts to 235/45R18 pushes the front rolling diameter to 26.33", a +1.35% gap versus the rear, which now exceeds BMW's xDrive specification and risks transfer case stress. Use the calculator below to check any combination before ordering.

Diameters are calculated from OEM specifications. xDrive column: OK = within 1% limit, WARN = exceeds 1% limit, N/A = not applicable (RWD model). Always verify with the calculator above using your exact sizes.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Select your BMW model from the dropdown — the OEM front tire size fills automatically and the drive type is pre-set.
  2. If your BMW has a staggered setup, note the rear OEM size displayed in the staggered fitment banner.
  3. Enter the tire size you want to run in the "Your Size" panel (width / aspect ratio / rim diameter).
  4. Click "Calculate & Compare" to see diameter difference, speedometer error, and — for xDrive models — the rolling diameter compliance check.
  5. Review the xDrive badge: must stay under 1%, ideally under 0.5%, before ordering tires for any AWD BMW.
  6. Use the Stats tab for full measurements and the Visual tab to see both diameters side-by-side.

Formula & Explanation

BMW Tire Fitment Formulas 1. Rolling Diameter (Overall Diameter) Diameter (in) = Rim Diameter + 2 × Sidewall Height Sidewall Height (in) = (Section Width mm × Aspect Ratio %) ÷ 25.4 ÷ 100 Example — 225/45R18: Sidewall = (225 × 0.45) ÷ 25.4 = 101.25 ÷ 25.4 = 3.99" Diameter = 18 + 2 × 3.99 = 25.97" 2. BMW xDrive Rolling Diameter Rule Diameter Difference % = |( Your Diameter − OEM Diameter ) ÷ OEM Diameter| × 100 BMW Specification: • < 0.5% — Well within tolerance (recommended safety margin) • 0.5–1.0% — Caution: approaching BMW's stated limit • > 1.0% — Exceeds BMW's specification; risk of transfer case stress • BMW also limits tread depth difference to 2 mm max between any two positions 3. Speedometer Error Speedo Error % = ((OEM Rev/Mile − New Rev/Mile) ÷ OEM Rev/Mile) × 100 Rev/Mile = 63,360 ÷ (π × Diameter) Positive % = actual speed is higher than displayed (larger tire). Negative % = actual speed is lower than displayed (smaller tire).

About BMW Tire Fitment

Why BMW Tire Fitment Is Different

BMW's xDrive full-time AWD system operates continuously — unlike part-time systems that only engage under slip. Any rolling diameter mismatch between axles creates constant mechanical stress on the transfer case rather than intermittent stress. BMW's 1% rolling diameter limit is stricter than many other AWD manufacturers precisely because of this always-active architecture.

Staggered Fitments on M Cars

BMW M cars use wider rear tires to balance acceleration traction with front steering response. On xDrive M variants (M3, M4, X5 M), the front and rear sizes are engineered so their rolling diameters stay within BMW's tolerance despite the width difference. If you choose aftermarket sizes on an xDrive M car, verify both axles independently with this calculator before ordering.

Run-Flat vs. Conventional Tires

Many BMWs leave the factory with run-flat tires and no spare. Switching to conventional tires improves ride quality and lowers replacement cost but requires a portable inflation kit or spare wheel. The fitment calculations — diameter, speedometer error, xDrive compliance — are identical regardless of construction type. The star mark (★) indicates BMW-approved fitment but does not affect the calculations.
